ENG vs SA: South Africa delivered a dominant performance to book their place in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-finals, thrashing England by seven wickets in Karachi. While South Africa marched ahead, England ended their campaign on a disastrous note—winless, captain-less, and on a seven-match losing streak.

England’s Batting Collapse

Opting to bat first, England struggled from the outset. Phil Salt showed early aggression but fell for just 25 runs, miscuing a short ball from Marco Jansen. Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett followed soon after, leaving England reeling at 37 for 3.

A brief fightback from Joe Root (37) and Harry Brook (35) steadied the innings, but Jansen struck again, taking a stunning catch at long-on to remove Brook. Moments later, Root was bowled trying to flick Wiaan Mulder, further sinking England’s hopes.

Jos Buttler, playing his last match as England’s captain, managed just 21 runs before he was dismissed by Lungi Ngidi, bringing an end to his disappointing tenure. England’s innings folded for 179 in 39 overs, with Jansen (3-39) and Mulder (3-25) leading the attack.

South Africa’s Clinical Chase

Chasing 180, South Africa lost Tristan Stubbs early to Jofra Archer, but Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen took charge.

  • Klaasen smashed 64 off 41 balls, striking 11 fours.
  • Van der Dussen anchored the chase with an unbeaten 72 off 72 balls.
  • The duo stitched together a match-winning 127-run stand for the third wicket.

Klaasen eventually fell to Adil Rashid, but David Miller sealed the win with a six off Liam Livingstone, as South Africa reached 181 for 3 in just 29.1 overs.

What’s Next?

South Africa have now reached the knockout stage of three consecutive ICC tournaments, following their semi-final appearances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.

Their semi-final opponent will be determined after the India vs New Zealand clash. If India loses, South Africa will play them in Dubai on Tuesday. If New Zealand loses, the match will take place in Lahore on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, England, already eliminated before this match, now face a tough rebuild following Jos Buttler’s resignation as captain.
