Barcelona Open 2025: Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open after a hard-fought straight-sets victory over Sebastian Korda on Wednesday. The Greek star, seeded No. 3, secured a 7-6(4), 6-4 win at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona to keep his title hopes alive.
In a match that surprisingly favored the servers despite the clay surface, both players held firm on serve throughout the opening set. A tightly contested first set went to a tiebreak, where Tsitsipas held his nerve to edge it 7-4.
The second set saw a critical early break in favor of Tsitsipas, who then maintained his lead with clinical serving. The 2024 runner-up, who is still searching for his maiden Barcelona crown after four finals appearances, was especially dominant behind his second serve—winning an impressive 85% of those points.
This win marks Tsitsipas’ fifth straight quarter-final appearance in Barcelona and also serves as sweet revenge for his loss to Korda at the Miami Open last month.
Next up for the world No. 16 is French rising star Arthur Fils, the No. 7 seed, who advanced earlier with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Spain’s Pedro Martinez. Fils faced just one break point in the match and saved it confidently.
Korda, currently ranked No. 24, had reached the round of 16 after rallying past Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in three sets.
Rune Rallies Past Baez to Reach Last Eight
Elsewhere, Holger Rune staged a strong comeback to defeat Sebastian Baez 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping the first set, Rune, who had recently withdrawn from Monte Carlo due to food poisoning, broke Baez three times in each of the last two sets to seal the win.
Rune, the world No. 13, found his rhythm after a shaky start that included 15 unforced errors. The Dane converted his third match point to book a spot in the quarter-finals.
