AUS vs IND: Two years after their heartbreaking loss in the 2023 World Cup final, India finally got their revenge, defeating Australia by four wickets to book a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. It was a tense chase, but Virat Kohli’s composed 84, along with Hardik Pandya’s late fireworks, helped India successfully chase down 265 runs in 48.1 overs at the Dubai International Stadium.
Kohli Steadies, Pandya Finishes in Style
Chasing 265 in a high-pressure semi-final, India didn’t have the best start. Shubman Gill (13) and Rohit Sharma (18) fell early, leaving India at 43/2. Shreyas Iyer (45) and Kohli built a crucial partnership, stabilizing the innings before Adam Zampa bowled Iyer with a beauty.
At 132/3, India still had work to do. Kohli played the anchor role, guiding the chase with patience and precision. But wickets kept falling. Axar Patel (21) was cleaned up by Nathan Ellis, and Kohli himself fell for 84, edging a delivery from Mitchell Starc to the keeper.
With 40 needed from 44 balls, the game was in the balance. Enter Hardik Pandya (28 off 24) and *KL Rahul (42 off 34)**, who took charge in the final overs. The duo kept their cool, and Pandya’s powerful hitting took India to the brink. Though he fell in the 49th over, Rahul finished the job with a massive six, sealing the win with 267/6 in 48.1 overs.
India’s Bowlers Set Up the Win
Earlier, India’s disciplined bowling helped restrict Australia to 264 all out. Opting to bat first, Australia started strong with Travis Head smashing 39 off 33 balls before falling to Varun Chakravarthy.
Steve Smith anchored the innings with a fighting 73 off 96 balls, while Marnus Labuschagne (29) and Alex Carey (61) provided crucial support. However, India struck at regular intervals.
Mohammed Shami was once again India’s go-to bowler, finishing with 3/48, while Varun Chakravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets each. Australia lost their last four wickets in the final five overs, managing only 29 runs in that period, which ultimately proved costly.
India Set for Final Against South Africa or New Zealand
With this victory, India have stormed into the Champions Trophy final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand.
This was India’s first 50-over ICC knockout win against Australia since their 2011 World Cup quarterfinal triumph. Having fallen short in the 2023 World Cup final, Rohit Sharma and his men now have a golden opportunity to claim an ICC trophy.
