Indian cricketers may find themselves balancing multiple commitments during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is working on a strategy to keep them engaged with red-ball cricket. With a crucial five-match away Test series against England scheduled for June-July, shortly after the IPL, the board is keen to ensure players remain prepared for the longer format.

Although the IPL, set to take place from March 22 to May 25, primarily focuses on white-ball cricket, select players could be required to take part in red-ball practice sessions or specialized activities aimed at maintaining their Test match readiness. The BCCI is determined to address India’s struggles in overseas Test series, particularly in England, where they have failed to secure a series win since the inception of the IPL.

While exact details of the initiative remain undisclosed, early discussions have already taken place. A preliminary meeting among key members of the Indian team management and BCCI officials was held in Dubai, where the team is currently competing in the Champions Trophy. Initial deliberations were conducted after India’s match against Pakistan, and further meetings are planned following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy on March 9, just two weeks before the IPL begins.

Traditionally, the BCCI allows players to fully commit to their IPL franchises without significant intervention. However, India’s poor record in England post-IPL has prompted a rethink. India has lost every away series to England following an IPL season, barring the 2021 series, which ended in a 2-2 draw after the final Test was played a year later due to COVID-19. The defeats include a 4-0 loss in 2011, a 3-1 series defeat in 2014, and a 4-1 setback in 2018.

More recently, India suffered a rare home series whitewash against New Zealand (0-3) and a 3-1 away defeat to Australia, further strengthening the BCCI’s resolve to ensure players are well-prepared for the upcoming England tour.

While the specifics of how players will balance IPL commitments with red-ball preparation remain confidential, the fact that planning is already underway suggests the BCCI is serious about improving India’s overseas Test performances.
