Diego Forlan is back in the news, but guess what? He’s not kicking a football this time. The Uruguayan legend, who used to tear it up at Manchester United, Villarreal, and Atletico Madrid, is trying something totally different—he’s diving into tennis!
Diego Forlan’s love for Tennis
Since retiring from football in 2019, Diego Forlan decided to follow an old love: tennis. And now, at 45, he’s about to make his pro debut at the Uruguay Open this November. Yup, Diego’s trading in football boots for tennis shoes and going all-in.
Surprisingly, Forlan’s been doing pretty well in tennis already. He’s played a few matches in the 45+ category at ITF Masters events—and won his first three games! Both football fans and tennis folks are curious to see how far he can take this new hobby-turned-career.
Uruguay Open
The Uruguay Open is happening at Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, a spot that means a lot to Forlan. He’ll be teaming up with Argentine pro Federico Coria for doubles, and fans are pumped to see how this duo clicks on the court.
“Imagine for me, to have the opportunity to be around [Maradona] and then the opportunity to play football and tennis — it was unbelievable,” Forlan said. “We played football and we played doubles in tennis. We had a really good relationship. He was very competitive. It was a nice game.”
Switching to tennis hasn’t been a walk in the park, but Forlan’s working hard. He’s training with Enrique Perez-Cassarino, Uruguay’s former Davis Cup captain, and putting in the hours to get game-ready. You know Forlan—he doesn’t back down from a challenge.
From banging in goals to smashing serves, Diego Forlan’s proving that passion never really fades. After winning the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup, it’s hard to top that, but the guy’s up for the ride. Whether he wins or not, fans are loving this next chapter of his wild journey—and we’re all here for it!
