Jasprit Bumrah, India’s captain, left the Sydney Test on Day 2 after a back issue forced him out during the second session. The pacer, who had been a key player throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, exited the field just after lunch and headed for medical scans.

Hospital Visit for Scans

Bumrah was seen leaving the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in a van with the Indian team’s support staff. He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for back scans. According to sources, the team expects the scan results by the end of the day.

Record-Breaking Performance Before Exit

Before leaving, Bumrah bowled 8 overs and dismissed Marnus Labuschagne, breaking a 46-year-old record for most wickets by an Indian bowler in a series in Australia. Despite his heroics, concerns about his workload linger, as Bumrah has bowled 152.1 overs across the series, claiming 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.06.Bumrah had shown signs of discomfort earlier, spending time off the field during the morning session. When he returned after lunch, his bowling speeds were noticeably lower, ranging from 120 to 130 kph. After one over, he left the field and later departed the SCG.

Injury Update

After the day’s play, bowler Prasidh Krishna confirmed Bumrah had experienced back spasms and was undergoing monitoring by the medical team.

“We’ll know more when the medical team shares the results,” Prasidh added.

Leadership Concerns

With no designated vice-captain, Virat Kohli took over the leadership for the session. Bumrah’s absence adds to India’s challenge as they aim to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Bumrah’s heavy workload has raised concerns, especially after he bowled 52 overs in the previous Test. Rohit Sharma acknowledged the risk, saying,

“We’ve tried to manage his workload carefully, but sometimes, we need to step back and give him a breather.”
