Australian cricket star Steve Smith has announced his retirement from one-day internationals (ODIs) after his team’s semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy 2025.

The 35-year-old captain, filling in for Pat Cummins, shared the news with his teammates after Australia’s four-wicket defeat in Dubai. Smith was the team’s top scorer with 73 runs, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

A Remarkable ODI Career

Smith made his ODI debut in 2010 as a leg-spinning all-rounder but later became one of the world’s top batters. Over 170 ODIs, he scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties.

He was also a key part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023. Looking back on his career, Smith said:

“There have been so many amazing moments. Winning two World Cups was a huge highlight, but what I’ll remember most is the great teammates and the journey we shared.”

Focusing on Test Cricket

While he is stepping away from ODIs, Smith will continue playing Test cricket and T20s. He is now focusing on the upcoming World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour, and the Ashes series against England.

“Test cricket is still my priority, and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead. I feel I still have a lot to contribute.”

A True Great of the Game

Smith’s retirement marks the end of an era for Australian ODI cricket. His skill, leadership, and consistency made him one of the game’s greatest batters.
