Who is Ruben Amorim? Manchester United's New Manager

Ruben Amorim, born on January 27, 1985, in Lisbon, Portugal, used to be a footballer and now manages Sporting CP, one of the top clubs in Portugal. Back in his playing days, he was a midfielder, spending most of his career at Belenenses and Benfica. He even played for Portugal in two World Cups, picking up 14 caps along the way.

From the Pitch to the Dugout

After retiring in 2017, Amorim wasted no time getting into coaching. He started out at Casa Pia in 2018, then moved to Braga. First, he managed Braga’s B team, but by the end of 2019, he was running the first team. Sporting CP liked what they saw and brought him in as their manager in March 2020.

Breaking Records at Sporting CP

Amorim hit the ground running at Sporting. In his first full season, he helped them pull off a double, winning the league (Primeira Liga) and the Taça da Liga. Not a small deal either—they hadn’t won the league in 19 years! Then, he did it again in 2023-24, leading them to another league title. No surprise he snagged the Manager of the Year award for the 2020-21 season.

What Makes Amorim’s Coaching Special?

Amorim’s got a thing for young talent and plays a high-energy, high-pressing style. He usually sticks with a 3-4-3 formation and isn’t afraid to take risks. A lot of his coaching ideas come from his own time as a player and from managers he looks up to, like José Mourinho.

Could He Be Heading to Manchester United?

Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about Amorim possibly taking over at Manchester United after they sacked Erik ten Hag. Sporting CP even confirmed that United is ready to pay his €10 million release clause. With everything Amorim’s achieved so far and his tactical know-how, it’s easy to see why he’s on United’s radar.

What’s Next?

Ruben Amorim’s rise from player to top manager has been pretty wild. If he does make the jump to Old Trafford, it could be a game-changer for both him and United. Whether or not he takes the job, one thing’s for sure—he’s got the talent and the guts to thrive on the biggest stage. All that’s left now is to see if he’s ready to take the plunge.
