Why IPL’s Robot Dog Champak Is Trending – Full Story Inside

IPL Robot Dog: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has introduced an unexpected yet captivating addition to its matches—a four-legged robotic dog named Champak. A Technological Marvel on the Sidelines

Champak is the result of a collaboration between global broadcast tech firms like wTVision, Omnicam, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It made its debut during the high-profile match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Equipped with high-definition cameras and powered by artificial intelligence, Champak can walk, run, jump, and even perform gestures like handshakes and heart signs. Its mobility and agility allow it to capture unique camera angles and behind-the-scenes moments, offering viewers an entirely new perspective of the game.

Beyond its visual role, IPL Robot Dog Champak has participated in interactive moments—delivering the coin for the toss, sharing fun exchanges with players like MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, and even engaging with fans in the stands. Its presence adds a futuristic charm to the league’s entertainment quotient.

A Name That Sparked Controversy

Despite its popularity, IPL Robot Dog Champak has stirred legal trouble for the BCCI. The publishers of ‘Champak’, a popular Indian children’s magazine launched in 1969, have filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the BCCI. According to them, the use of the name for a robotic dog in a sporting event infringes on their brand and could dilute its identity.

The case was taken up by the Delhi High Court, which has asked the BCCI to respond within four weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for July 9, 2025.

In response, the BCCI defended the name by stating that “Champak” is a common word (also the name of a flower) and that the robot’s name was decided through a public poll. The board maintains that the naming was done purely to enhance fan involvement, with no commercial exploitation intended.

Innovation at the Heart of the IPL

The IPL has always been at the forefront of innovation—be it through data analytics, player auction strategies, or broadcasting techniques. The introduction of Champak reinforces its commitment to evolving the cricket-watching experience.

By blending sports, entertainment, and technology, the league is setting new standards for global sporting events. Whether Champak continues to feature under the same name or not, its arrival has already left an indelible mark on the 2025 season.
