Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign took a hit after star opener Fakhar Zaman was ruled out due to a recurring knee injury. The setback comes just days before their high-voltage clash against India in Dubai.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Imam-ul-Haq will replace Zaman in the squad, following approval from the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Event Technical Committee. The much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan encounter is scheduled for Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
“Twenty-nine-year-old Imam, who has played 72 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Fakhar was ruled out due to an oblique injury,” read an ICC media statement.
Injury During New Zealand Clash Ends Fakhar Zaman’s Tournament
Zaman sustained the injury while fielding in Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand on February 19. The 34-year-old, who boasts an ODI average of over 46, was seen struggling after chasing a ball to the boundary in the very first over. He was unable to take his usual opening position in the second innings, forcing Saud Shakeel to step in as a temporary opener. Zaman later batted at No. 4, managing 24 off 41 balls, but looked visibly uncomfortable.
“Unfortunately, I am now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity. I will be backing our boys in green from home,” Zaman wrote on ‘X’.
This marks yet another injury setback for Zaman, who had returned to the national side for the Champions Trophy after last featuring in the 2023 World Cup. His absence could be a major concern for Pakistan as they aim for a strong tournament run.
