Mohammed Shami continues to dominate on the global stage, proving once again why he’s one of India’s most reliable match-winners. Returning from a lengthy injury layoff, the seasoned pacer made an emphatic statement in India’s Champions Trophy opener, grabbing a stunning five-wicket haul against Bangladesh. His remarkable spell of 5/53 not only powered India to victory but also propelled him past Zaheer Khan to become India’s highest wicket-taker in ICC 50-over tournaments.
- Shami has 60 wickets in ICC ODI events from just 19 innings.
- He surpassed Zaheer Khan’s tally of 59 wickets in 32 innings.
- His impact in global tournaments is undeniable.
- He was the leading wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 wickets in just 7 matches.
Mohammed Shami’s Approach: Wickets Over Economy
When asked about the secret behind his success in ICC events, Shami revealed that his focus is solely on taking wickets, not on maintaining a low economy rate.
“In ICC events, I don’t care about getting hit. I just go for wickets. Economy rate doesn’t bother me. I spent eight hours a day at the NCA. I had the hunger, and without hunger, you can’t achieve your goals,” he said in the post-match press conference.
The 34-year-old admitted that the road to recovery was challenging after being sidelined for nearly a year due to an ankle injury. However, his determination to return stronger helped him make an impactful comeback.
“It was tough after 14 months away. It pinches, it hurts. But I got the opportunity to play domestic cricket, and that helped me perform like this,” Shami added.
With India set to face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next Group A fixture on Sunday, Mohammed Shami remains unfazed.
“Winning builds confidence. The mindset remains the same against Pakistan—no problem at all,” he assured.
