Barcelona Open 2025: Fresh off his title win in Monte Carlo, Carlos Alcaraz was made to work by American qualifier Ethan Quinn in his opening match. The Spaniard, aiming for a third title in Barcelona after wins in 2022 and 2023, prevailed 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to book his place in the round of 16.
Alcaraz looked sharp early, but had to dig deep in the second set. After falling behind 3-1, he faced a set point at 5-6 in the tie-break before rallying to close it out.
“This tournament means a lot to me,” said Alcaraz. “I felt the nerves today, but I’m really happy I managed to win in straight sets. Two days ago I played a final in different conditions. Energy and recovery are key right now.”
He’ll next face Serbia’s Laslo Djere as he continues his bid for another title on Spanish soil.
Cameron Norrie Crashes Out
Cameron Norrie’s Barcelona campaign ends in Round 1, while Carlos Alcaraz survives a scare against qualifier Ethan Quinn to continue his strong clay-court run.
Cameron Norrie’s run at the Barcelona Open was cut short on Tuesday after a three-set loss to Karen Khachanov, despite taking the opening set. The British No. 2, who entered the main draw via qualifying, went down 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 in a tight opening-round clash.
It’s been a challenging stretch for Norrie, who failed to make it past the qualifiers at the Monte-Carlo Masters last week and hasn’t won a main draw match since Indian Wells in March.
Ruud, Tsitsipas, and De Minaur Advance
Defending champion Casper Ruud and third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also made smooth progress into the last 16. Ruud dispatched Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-3, while Tsitsipas breezed past Reilly Opelka 6-2, 6-2.
Australia’s Alex de Minaur secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry to set up a last-16 meeting with Britain’s Jacob Fearnley on Thursday.
Upset of the Day: Tiafoe Out
In one of the day’s surprises, ninth seed Frances Tiafoe was eliminated by unseeded Spaniard Jaume Munar, losing 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. It’s a second straight early exit for the American, who also fell in round two at Monte Carlo last week.
Elsewhere: Dart Falls in Rouen
Over on the WTA side, Britain’s Harriet Dart was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by French wild card Lois Boisson in Rouen, exiting in the opening round.
