BBL 2025 FINAL: Hobart Hurricanes Claim Maiden BBL Trophy Thanks to Owen’s Blazing Knock

BBL 2025 FINAL: The Hobart Hurricanes have finally etched their name into Big Bash League (BBL) history, clinching their maiden title in spectacular fashion. In front of a roaring home crowd at Ninja Stadium, 23-year-old Mitchell Owen produced one of the most memorable innings in the tournament’s history, smashing a scintillating 39-ball century. His remarkable performance led the Hurricanes to a dominant seven-wicket win over the Sydney Thunder with 30 balls to spare.

Owen’s Heroics Light Up the Final

Mitchell Owen was the undisputed star of the night, delivering a performance for the ages. His blistering century, which tied the record for the fastest in BBL history, was a masterclass in power-hitting. The Tasmanian opener smashed 11 sixes in his 108 off 42 balls, dismantling the Thunder’s bowling attack and setting the tone for the Hurricanes’ successful chase.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Owen said after the match. “I just stuck to my game plan—get us off to a good start so the middle order could take it easy. Thankfully, it worked out today.”

Thunder’s Strong Start Crumbles Under Pressure

The Sydney Thunder began the final brightly, with openers Jason Sangha (67) and David Warner (48) putting together a commanding 97-run partnership. However, Hurricanes skipper Nathan Ellis turned the game around with a decisive spell, claiming 3-23 and removing both Sangha and Warner.

The Hurricanes’ pace spearhead Riley Meredith further rattled the Thunder, consistently clocking over 90 mph and picking up three key middle-order wickets, including England’s Sam Billings, who was bowled for 20. Despite a challenging outing for Chris Jordan (0-47 in four overs), the Hurricanes restricted the Thunder to a manageable 182-7.

Wade and McDermott Finish the Job

Following Owen’s departure, Matthew Wade (32 off 17) and Ben McDermott (18 off 12) ensured there were no hiccups in the chase, steering the Hurricanes home with ease. The victory was sealed with five overs to spare, sparking wild celebrations among the Hobart faithful.

A Season to Remember

The Hurricanes’ triumph capped off a stellar season, in which they finished at the top of the regular-season standings. For fans, the long-awaited title win was a moment of pure joy, cementing the Hurricanes’ place in BBL history.
