IPL 2025: Pandya Fined for Slow Over Rate, Nehra for Misconduct

The high-stakes IPL 2025 clash between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans didn’t just deliver a nail-biting finish—it also sparked disciplinary actions against two major figures from the opposing camps.

Slow Over Rate Costs Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians Heavily

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya was handed a steep ₹24 lakh fine after his side failed to complete their overs in the allotted time during Tuesday’s rain-hit encounter at Wankhede Stadium.

This marked Mumbai’s second slow over rate offence this season, invoking harsher penalties under the IPL’s over-rate policy. All other team members, including the impact player and the concussion substitute, were fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their individual match fees—whichever was lower.

Pandya’s track record with over-rate violations continues to haunt him. Earlier in the season, he was fined ₹12 lakh during MI’s first game against the same opponent—Gujarat Titans—and had even missed the opening match of 2025 due to a suspension stemming from last year’s infractions.

Ashish Nehra Pulled Up for On-Field Conduct

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was also sanctioned, but for a different reason. The former India pacer was observed in an emotionally charged exchange with match officials during the second innings. Though the IPL’s official release did not delve into specific details, it confirmed that Nehra breached the code pertaining to behavior “contrary to the spirit of the game.”

As a result, Nehra was fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point. The former Indian international accepted the Level 1 charge under Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct. In such cases, the match referee’s verdict is considered final and binding.

A Rainy Night Ends with Drama On and Off the Field

The clash itself was an intense affair, ending with Gujarat Titans chasing down the DLS-revised target in a match that extended past midnight. The stop-start nature of the game, influenced by rain, appeared to disrupt MI’s rhythm and contribute to their over-rate struggles.

Emotions ran high on both sides as the match saw momentum swing wildly before Gujarat eventually clinched victory with three wickets in hand.
