Jasprit Bumrah Set to Miss Initial IPL 2025 Matches Due to Back Injury

Mumbai Indians’ (MI) campaign in IPL 2025 could be off to a challenging start as their ace fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is likely to miss the initial matches due to a lingering back injury. Bumrah, who sustained the injury during India’s fifth Test against Australia in Sydney earlier this year, has been out of action since January. His absence will be a significant blow to MI, who finished 10th in IPL 2024 and are eager to reclaim their former dominance.

Bumrah’s back issues have been a recurring concern, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been closely monitoring his rehabilitation. Sources indicate that while his recovery is progressing well, the medical team at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru has not set a definitive return date. MI’s first few games will likely see Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Corbin Bosch stepping up in the pace department, while skipper Hardik Pandya may also have to take on additional bowling responsibilities.

Recovery Timeline and Potential Return to MI Squad

Despite being included in India’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, Bumrah was ultimately unable to attain full fitness, leading to his omission from the final lineup. His absence did not stop India from securing the title, but it raised concerns about his availability for the IPL and beyond.

As per reports, Bumrah has been steadily increasing his workload in the nets, undergoing match simulations to regain peak fitness. However, his participation in the IPL will be contingent on medical clearance. He is expected to join the MI squad by early April, but his availability for their initial fixtures remains uncertain.

MI’s opening matches include a blockbuster clash against Chennai Super Kings on March 23, followed by games against Gujarat Titans (March 29), Kolkata Knight Riders (March 31), Lucknow Super Giants (April 4), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (April 7). As of now, Bumrah is unlikely to feature in these encounters.

Former MI bowling coach Shane Bond has warned about the risks of rushing Bumrah back into action, citing concerns over the long-term impact of his injury. With India’s crucial five-Test series against England scheduled for June, the team management is likely to prioritize his fitness for the longer format.

For Mumbai Indians, Bumrah’s absence is a hurdle they must overcome early in the season. How well they manage without their bowling spearhead could shape their IPL 2025 campaign.
