England’s disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has put Jos Buttler’s captaincy under the spotlight. Their early exit, following a crucial loss to Afghanistan, has raised questions about Jos Buttler’s future as England’s white-ball captain.

Since winning the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup, England has faced a difficult period in limited-overs cricket. A seventh-place finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup, followed by a semifinal loss in the 2024 T20 World Cup, led to a squad overhaul. Players like Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Reece Topley, Sam Curran, and Chris Jordan were moved aside, and Brendon McCullum was appointed as England’s all-format head coach. However, the expected transformation in England’s white-ball performance did not materialize.

Leading into the Champions Trophy, England suffered a 4-1 T20I series defeat to India and a 3-0 ODI series loss. Their campaign began with a strong total of 351 against Australia, only to be undone by a record chase. Their must-win clash against Afghanistan saw moments of promise, but England failed to capitalize, sealing their elimination and further fueling discussions about Buttler’s leadership.

In the post-match press conference, Joss Buttler acknowledged the need for self-evaluation. “Obviously, the results haven’t been good enough. I have to consider all possibilities and reflect on whether I am part of the problem or part of the solution,” he stated. However, he emphasized that he wouldn’t make an emotional decision immediately. “It’s something I need to think about carefully and discuss with the right people.”

Buttler’s own form has also been a concern. Since the 2023 World Cup, he has averaged 30.57 in ODIs, with a top score of 58*, and 30.11 in T20Is, with just two half-centuries. Reflecting on his innings against Afghanistan, Jos Buttler admitted frustration at not converting starts into big scores. “At my best, I believe I’m one of the best players in the world, and that’s what the team needs from me. Unfortunately, I haven’t been delivering that.”

Despite the challenges, Jos Buttler insisted that he enjoys leading the team. “Even before I was captain, I saw myself as a leader. But when results don’t go your way, it’s tough. We haven’t been a winning side for some time now, and that brings difficult moments.”

With England looking to bounce back, Buttler’s future as captain remains uncertain. However, both he and the team management will need to decide the best way forward to restore England’s dominance in white-ball cricket.
