Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood is optimistic about his return to the squad for the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India, scheduled to begin on Saturday at the Gabba. After missing the second Test in Adelaide due to a minor side strain, Hazlewood bowled two high-intensity spells at the Adelaide Oval on Monday to test his fitness.
Recovery Progress
Hazlewood explained that his recovery would be determined by how his body responds within the next 24 hours. “It’s all about how I pull up after the session,” he said. “The repetitive action, intensity, and cooling down between spells are key factors. If I wake up tomorrow feeling ready to go, that’s a big positive.”
The 33-year-old has struggled with side injuries in recent years, often forcing him out of key matches. However, Hazlewood noted that these experiences have helped him recognize warning signs early and manage his fitness better.
Hazlewood revealed that he could have pushed to play in Adelaide if it had been the final Test of the summer but decided against it to avoid aggravating the injury. “If it were the last game, I might have played, but the risk was too high. It’s about being smart and making sure I’m available for the long term,” he said.
Selection Dilemma for Australia
If Hazlewood is cleared to play, selectors face a tough decision between him and Scott Boland. Boland impressed in Adelaide with match figures of 5/105, utilizing the pink ball effectively. However, Hazlewood’s red-ball experience and proven track record could make him a crucial asset at the Gabba.
Gabba Conditions Favor Return
The Gabba’s pitch, traditionally favoring pacers, offers a return to red-ball cricket, which Hazlewood believes suits Australia’s strengths. “The red ball works better on the Gabba surface compared to the pink ball, which softens quickly here. It’s a venue we enjoy playing at,” he noted.
Despite recent setbacks at the Gabba, including a historic loss to India in 2021 and a surprise defeat to the West Indies last summer, Hazlewood expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and excel.
