Shubman Gill has dispelled rumors about his health concerns by turning up for a solo practice session at the ICC Academy on Thursday. The India vice-captain, who had skipped the team’s net session the previous night, sparked speculation that he might be unwell. However, his two-hour-long training session on Thursday afternoon suggests he is fit and ready for India’s upcoming Champions Trophy fixture against New Zealand on Sunday (March 2) at DICS.
Shubman Gill was the only Indian player to train on what was designated as a rest day for the team. He was accompanied by throwdown specialists Raghu and Nuwan, along with assistant coach Abhishen Nayar, indicating that he was focused on refining his batting skills ahead of the crucial knockout stages.
Team India’s Practice Routine and Injury Updates
On Wednesday night, the entire Indian squad took part in a three-hour practice session. Notably, both Gill and Rohit Sharma were missing from key aspects of the session. While Gill’s absence led to health-related speculation, Rohit’s decision to skip batting practice has fueled concerns regarding his hamstring injury, which he sustained while fielding during the high-stakes match against Pakistan last Sunday.
Sources suggest that Rohit Sharma may be rested for the upcoming match against New Zealand to prevent aggravating the injury ahead of more critical fixtures. With the semifinal scheduled for Tuesday (March 5) and a potential final on March 9, the team management might opt to keep their captain fresh for the knockout stages rather than risk him in a match that doesn’t impact their qualification.
India and New Zealand Set for Semifinals, March 2 Clash to Decide Opponent
With two wins each, India and New Zealand have already qualified for the semifinals from Group A, eliminating Pakistan and Bangladesh from the competition. This means that the outcome of the March 2 match will not affect their progression to the next stage. However, the result will determine the final four lineup, as the winner will face the second-best team from Group B in the semifinals.
Group B remains highly competitive, with Afghanistan, Australia, and South Africa all vying for the two available semifinal spots. The team that finishes second in Group B will face the winner of the India vs. New Zealand match in the final four.
Upcoming Schedule for India and New Zealand

✅ Friday, Feb 28 – Full net session
❌ Saturday, March 1 – Rest day, no practice before match day - New Zealand’s Training Plan:

As the tournament enters the knockout stages, all eyes will be on India’s team selection and fitness management, particularly regarding Gill and Rohit Sharma’s availability for the upcoming matches.
