Sunrisers Hyderabad Knocked Out of IPL 2025 Playoff Race

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), one of the most consistent sides in recent IPL editions, have been officially eliminated from the 2025 Indian Premier League playoff race following a rain-abandoned fixture against Delhi Capitals on May 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Mathematically Out

The no-result left SRH stuck on 7 points from 11 matches, making it mathematically impossible for them to qualify for the top four. The result also confirmed the end of their campaign alongside Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals—two other heavyweights who failed to live up to expectations this season.

Season of Struggles

After reaching the IPL final in 2024, SRH entered the 2025 season with high expectations. However, inconsistency plagued their campaign. Despite boasting a dynamic batting unit with the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Ishan Kishan, the team failed to fire collectively.

They managed just three wins in their first 11 games, and their usually explosive batting lineup couldn’t replicate its 2024 magic—scoring only four totals above 200 this season compared to seven last year.

Home Woes Prove Costly

Head coach Daniel Vettori admitted post-match that the team’s struggles at home played a critical role in their exit. SRH managed just two wins in six games at their home ground in Hyderabad, with slow and unpredictable pitch conditions neutralizing their attacking strengths.

“We couldn’t adapt to the surface at home as well as we would’ve liked. That really hurt us,” Vettori said.

Rain Has the Final Say

Needing a win to stay alive in the playoff race, SRH put on an impressive bowling display against Delhi Capitals, restricting them to 133/7 in a rain-hit game. Captain Pat Cummins led from the front, returning figures of 3/19 and dismissing Karun Nair with the very first ball.

Unfortunately, heavy rain prevented any further play, and the match was called off without a ball being bowled in SRH’s chase—officially ending their slim hopes.

Looking Ahead

With their campaign over, SRH will now look to give opportunities to younger players and regroup ahead of IPL 2026. Vettori emphasized the importance of learning from this season’s setbacks.

“We’ve got a strong core, but we need to be smarter with our planning and adaptability,” he noted.

Despite the disappointment, SRH fans will hope that this young and talented squad can bounce back stronger next season.
