With the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 fast approaching, former New Zealand pace legend Tim Southee has thrown his full support behind the Black Caps, believing they have what it takes to make a deep run in the tournament. Having retired from international cricket at the end of 2024, Southee will watch the action unfold from the sidelines for the first time in years—but that hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for his former teammates.
Can New Zealand Repeat 2000 Glory?
New Zealand’s track record in ICC events has been impressive over the years, with the team consistently making deep runs. As the Black Caps look to replicate their Champions Trophy triumph from 2000, Southee remains hopeful that they can get on a roll and go all the way.
“New Zealand always punches above its weight in ICC tournaments. In a format like the Champions Trophy, momentum is everything. If they find their rhythm early, they have every chance of lifting that trophy again,” he concluded.
Tim Southee is particularly optimistic about the team’s chances after their recent Tri-Nation Series victory in Pakistan. He highlighted how different players have stepped up at crucial moments, creating a balanced squad of experienced campaigners and exciting young talents.
“The team has shown great adaptability, and we’ve seen different guys take responsibility at key moments,” Southee told ICC. “That blend of experience and fresh energy will serve them well in the Champions Trophy. Winning in Pakistan has given them valuable exposure to similar conditions, which will be an advantage heading into the tournament.”
New-Look Pace Attack to Shine
For the first time in years, New Zealand will enter a major ICC tournament without the familiar duo of Southee and Trent Boult leading the attack. While their absence leaves a void in terms of experience, Southee sees this as a golden opportunity for the next generation.
Fast bowlers Will O’Rourke and Nathan Smith are among those expected to step up, and Southee is confident they are ready for the challenge.
“It’s different not having Trent and myself there, but that’s what makes this exciting,” he said. “Will O’Rourke has shown immense potential in Tests, and he has all the attributes to succeed in international cricket. Nathan Smith carries great confidence, which is key at this level.”
Williamson & Santner to Lead the Charge
Southee also backed Kane Williamson and captain Mitchell Santner to spearhead New Zealand’s campaign. Despite limited one-day appearances in recent years, Williamson has returned to form at the right time, showing glimpses of his trademark class.
“Kane is pure quality. He may not have played much ODIs recently, but his composure at the crease is always reassuring. As a fan now, it’s great to see him back to his best,” Southee remarked.
Santner, meanwhile, has impressed in his leadership role, and Southee believes his calm demeanor and all-round abilities will be crucial for New Zealand.
“Mitch is a great thinker of the game, and he leads by example in all three areas—batting, bowling, and fielding. He’s growing into the captaincy role and has all the attributes to guide the team forward.”
