What Are the New IPL 2025 Player Replacement Rules?

IPL 2025 Player Replacement Rules: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made significant changes to the player replacement rules for IPL 2025, allowing teams more flexibility in handling injuries. Under the new guidelines, franchises can now sign replacement players up until their 12th league match, compared to the previous limit of seven matches.

This rule change ensures teams have more time to assess injuries and adjust their squads accordingly, preventing them from being severely impacted by long-term player absences.

How the New Replacement Rule Works

To be eligible as a replacement, a player must be listed in the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP), which includes players who declared themselves available for the IPL season. Additionally, replacement players cannot be signed for a fee lower than their reserve price or higher than the contract value of the injured player they are replacing.

Impact on Net Bowlers and Transfers

A significant update in the new rules is that net bowlers who are also part of the RAPP list can be signed as replacements by any franchise. The original team cannot block such a move, ensuring fair opportunities for all teams to strengthen their squads mid-season.

Salary Cap Implications

The BCCI has clarified that a replacement player’s fee will not count towards a franchise’s salary cap for the current season. However, if the franchise decides to retain the replacement player for the following season, their salary will then be included in the cap calculations, just like any other contracted player.

Rules for Injured Players

  • The injured player must be ruled out before or during the team’s 12th match.
  • A BCCI-nominated doctor must confirm that the injury is season-ending.
  • Once a player is replaced, they cannot return to play for the remainder of the season.

Notable Mid-Season Replacements in IPL 2025

Several teams have already taken advantage of the new rule, signing replacements for injured players:

  • Kolkata Knight Riders: Chetan Sakariya replaces Umran Malik.
  • Mumbai Indians: Mujeeb-ur-Rahman replaces Allah Ghazanfar; Corbin Bosch replaces Lizaad Williams.
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad: Wiaan Mulder replaces Brydon Carse.

With these new rules in place, IPL 2025 promises to be more dynamic than ever, giving teams greater flexibility in handling injuries while ensuring fair play across all franchises.
