Why Glenn Maxwell Calls His RCB Exit ‘Beautiful’ Ahead of IPL 2025

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell recently opened up about his release from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction, which is set to take place in Jeddah on November 24 and 25. RCB has made headlines by retaining only three players—Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal, and Rajat Patidar—opting to free up significant room for reshaping the squad. Maxwell, who joined RCB in 2021 and contributed substantially to their playoff runs in three out of four seasons, described his departure as a “beautiful exit.”

Reflecting on the transition, Maxwell explained he had a thoughtful discussion with RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, and head coach Andy Flower. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Around the Wicket, Maxwell shared, “I got a phone call from Mo and Andy, and we had a half-hour chat where they explained their decision not to retain me. It was a really beautiful exit meeting, if you can call it that, talking about their future plans and strategy.”

He added that he felt at peace with the decision and grateful for the transparent communication.

In his time with RCB, Maxwell became an essential middle-order force, amassing 1,266 runs in 52 matches. His power-packed innings, like the 77 off 44 against Rajasthan Royals and 78 off 49 against Kolkata Knight Riders, made him a fan favorite. Despite some standout performances, he struggled for form in the last IPL season, managing only 52 runs in nine innings at an average of 5.77. His underwhelming form and RCB’s need to recalibrate their roster ultimately led to his release.

“Not the End of My RCB Journey,” Says Glenn Maxwell

While Maxwell’s time at RCB might have officially ended, he is not ruling out a potential return. Expressing his willingness to rejoin the team, he said, “I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over. I’d certainly love to get back there. It’s a great franchise, and I really enjoyed my time there.”

With a substantial purse of Rs. 84 crore for the auction, RCB may still secure some of their former players, including Maxwell, through right-to-match cards or fresh bids.

RCB’s decision to retain only Kohli, Patidar, and Dayal, highlights their intent to build a younger core around Kohli, the franchise icon. This bold move leaves them well-positioned with ample budget flexibility as they enter the mega auction.

Maxwell’s positive outlook on his release and willingness to return to RCB underlines his affection for the franchise, and fans will be watching closely to see if the all-rounder dons the RCB jersey again in IPL 2025.
